Nazi spies and murder intrude upon the uneasy exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. In July 1942, Sir Harry Oakes, a wealthy businessman and acquaintance of the Duke and Duchess, was found murdered on Nassau. The murder is unsolved to this day. Could the killing be the result of Sir Harry's suspicions regarding the Duchess's friendship with a Nazi spy? Lang Reilly becomes embroiled in a struggle for newly surfaced evidence that uncovers a secret, radically pro-royalist society that will do anything to spare embarrassment to the Crown, past and present.

This is a good thriller that starts with the murder of a woman. There are actually two stories, both based on historical facts. The main story is based in World War II, The British King had given up his crown to marry a scandalous American woman. The Duke and Duchess, who were sympathetic to Germany, were sent to the Bahamas. In the story, a prominent man was brutally murdered. The second story was a legal case that was a fictional account of the Georgia school system cheating on student progress. The only problem was that there were a number of typos.

I usually enjoy the Lang Reilly books and this one was pretty good until the ending which I found very unsatisfying. The murders essentially went unsolved even though we did find our who was behind the lady's death and the secret society is no longer going to come after Reilly and company but couldn't we at least know what dirt Reilly had on the top bad guy that he used to bargain with.
A good story about an interesting time in history. The modern storyline and present day characters were ok. I might read more by this author. It was well written
I really enjoy the Lang Reilly adventures. The kindle edition has perhaps two dozen typos which were a slight distraction.
In this installment, the author came up with a very good story blending WWII intrigue with the present day Reilly and his family. The characters really did not progress much in this offering although their son is getting older. The story is fast paced and hard to put down once you get into it. If you like the series, you will like this installment.
I have read all of Gregg's previous books and have enjoyed all of them including this one. 5 stars for the contents of this book, but the publisher's formatting of the text is TERRIBLE (0 stars).
Like many readers I like the story lines that Loomis manages to come up with and the light he sheds on historical and mythological events. What I don't like about this book is the worst editing/proofreading it has been my misfortune to encounter. On one page alone Wallis Simpson is referred to as Wallace in one paragraph, Wallis (correct) in the next and Wallace again in the next. Princess Diana becomes Dianna. The Falkland Islands are moved to the South Pacific. There are spelling mistakes galore with my favourite being Devine for Divine. I don't know how a writer can allow such a mess to be made of his work.
The plot progresses smoothly with no wild swings of credulity. The few action scenes are well done, and make the reader wish for more. However, while the plot is interesting, it lacks the dramatic impact of one dealing with far reaching, catastrophic events. Resurrecting an unresolved murder case from the middle of WWII, doesn't quite cut it, despite involving the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The original case pursued by the main character, gets lost in the shuffle, and well it should. A trial involving teachers who changed test answers is not sufficient grist for this mill.
